Understanding Wellness
Wellness is a holistic concept that goes beyond simply being free from illness. It encompasses the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
At its core, wellness is multidimensional and integrative, recognizing that our physical health is connected to our mental and emotional states, our social relationships, our environment, and even our sense of purpose. Rather than focusing solely on avoiding disease, wellness emphasizes proactive measures to enhance quality of life and reach optimal health.
Physical (somatic) wellness involves maintaining health through, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, exercise and avoiding harmful behaviors like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Mental wellness/ emotional focuses on emotional wellbeing and addressing experiences or emotions that might be interfering with mental wellness. It involves being open to new ideas, thinking critically, and expanding knowledge. Emotional/ mental wellness centers on understanding and effectively expressing feelings, managing stress, maintaining optimism, and developing resilience to life's challenges. Social wellness relates to developing and maintaining meaningful relationships, contributing to community, and fostering a support network.
Wellness is not a static state but a continuous process of change and growth. It's about making conscious choices that lead toward optimal health and vitality, allowing us to live more fully in all aspects of our lives.
